Keeping your Child Safe Around Water

One of my family’s favorite things to do in the warm weather is to head to the local pool 0r spend time in the backyard on our water slide. Remember that water safety should be your #1 priority. I wanted to share a few tips to keep you and your family safe:

  • Always remember that your children should have your undivided attention when they are in and around water.
  • Infants and toddlers should always be only an arm’s reach to provide active supervision.
  • Dress your children in bright colored swimwear so you can find them at all times and to help lifeguards spot them.
  • Don’t depend on floaties, inflatable rings or blowup items as flotation devices. These often provide a false sense of security. If you use devices like the one in this picture, make sure to have your eyes and hands on your child at all time.
  • Learn CPR. Check with your local hospital, fire department or the American Red Cross for classes.

Stay safe when you are around water!

Stewie the Duck App Teaches Water Safety

In Norwalk, CT and several other locations, Stew Leonard’s, the world’s largest dairy store, is a pretty popular place. What started out as a dairy store, which grew from a delivery service, is now also a destination for baked goods, produce, meats, seafood and many gourmet delicacies as well as a very kid-friendly theme park. There are singing milk cartons and produce, Clover the Cow walking through the aisles, a petting zoo, and food and farm related ditties playing throughout the store. If you’ve ever been to one of the Stew’s stores in the CT/NY area, you can relate to it’s kid-friendly shopping experience.

Behind the stellar success of Stew’s is a tragic story of the loss of Stew Leonard III at the age of 21 months in a terrible accident at their vacation home in 1989. With a crowd of family and friends nearby, he still managed to fall in the pool unnoticed and drown.

As an ongoing tribute to his short life and to help others avoid such a devastating tragedy, the Leonard Family has spent the intervening years advocating for youth water safety. They have created a charitable foundation that sponsors water safety classes, swimming lessons, public service media and Stewie the Duck children’s books. Their mission is to spread the word that safety planning and awareness can go a long way towards saving a life. Teaching young children some basic rules about swimming and being safe near the water is crucial.

Their latest project is an app featuring Stewie the Duck that has been released for the iPad and iPhone. They’ve taken the Stewie the Duck Learns to Swim book and created an app of the story with a sing along of the catchy safe swimming song that plays several times and is a great way to reinforce the basic safety rules. You can listen to the child-narrated audio version or read it out loud yourself.

There are water safety tips for parents and a link to the Stewie the Duck website. This is a terrific way to introduce your children to the idea of safety and precaution that they need to learn before venturing near the water.

Summer is just about here. And it’s never too early to start teaching your kids about being safe in and around pools and swimming areas. This app is a great way to get started.
