Planning a Kids’ Halloween Party

By

Halloween is an exciting time for kids… they get to dress up like someone (or something) else, carve pumpkins and enjoy special “tricks and treats.” But for the little ones, some of the festivities and experiences can be a bit frightening. Throwing a kids’ Halloween party is a great way for them to have some safe, enjoyable fun. Here are some ideas for throwing the spookiest party ever!

Decorations: Think orange and black with pops of green. Streamers and balloons are classic party décor, but take it a step further with fake spider webs, hanging ghosts, skeletons or a “witches broom” section, which are fun but still kid-friendly. These DIY fanged pumpkins are cute tabletop additions. Bonus points for decorating your porch or doorstep too!

Food: The nice thing about a kids party is that you don’t have to go all out gourmet! Keep it simple with foods that are nut-free (oh, those allergies!) and kid-approved. A healthy skeleton vegetable dip platter, hot dog and pizza mummies and some festive cake pops or cupcakes are just a few great options.

Games/Activities: It’s important to keep the kids occupied with fun activities. Easy paper plate crafts and mini-pumpkin decorating are enjoyable ways to pass the time and offer an item to take home! For a physical activity, try Simon Says or musical chairs to classic Halloween songs like “Monster Mash” and “The Addams Family.” A nice way to wind things down is a (not too) spooky story time. One of our favorites is The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything by Linda Williams.

Goodie Bags (optional): It’s always nice to send the kids home with a little treat. Since they’ll already be full of candy, a good alternative would be things like spider rings, stickers, an activity book with crayons, or squishy eyes. Check out your local value store for cute items they’ll love that won’t break the bank.
