Best Jackets for the Fall

Even though it’s been in the 70′s and 80′s in Rhode Island over the last week, I’m still getting myself ready (and amped up!) for Fall. I mean, come on — it’s October! The sweaters, scarves, boots and jackets are out already! Now they just need to be worn!

I don’t know what it is about the Fall, but it’s my favorite fashionable season (by far!). I love the cozy sweaters. I love the layering of clothes. I love the warm colors. I love the new trendy outerwear. I just love it all. I personally think I love Fall so much because coming off the summer, with the intense heat… it’s nice to mix fashion up a bit!

So let’s talk jackets — one of my fave fall items! I’m not kidding when I say that I have about 10 Fall jackets hanging in my closet right now (don’t tell my husband) just waiting to be worn! I love love love them! And last night (even in 75 degree weather) I took one of my newest ones out with me because I simply needed to wear it! :)

There’s so many amazing styles right now for the Fall when it comes to jackets and outwear, but there are definitely a few that are raising among the rest.

Here are 4 jackets to keep your fashionable eye on…

Starting from top left going clockwise…

1. Trench Coat… Trench coats have been a staple every Fall and Spring, they really are go-to jackets. Perfect for the cool weather and perfect for rain. Believe it or not, I only got my first trench coat last year. Khaki and black… and recently got an olive colored one this Fall. Trench coats are everywhere right now… I love them because they’re classic and cool and sophisticated. They really are perfect for a fancy occasion or just a basic soccer game! There’s something fabulous about having such a versatile jacket. Definitely a must-have this Fall.

2. Cape Coat… Oh, yes! Trendy as can be! Each season there’s an item that is totally cool and a totally must-have, this season it’s the Cape Coat. I bought a black one this season and I love it. It’s fashionable enough to be trendy, yet practical enough to keep you warm. There’s something VERY good about that in a jacket!

3. Faux Fur Jacket… A la Rachel Zoe! I credit this sudden Faux Fur craze to Rachel Zoe… hands down! Here’s the thing — it will most definitely not be a hit next season, but right now – it’s everywhere! I think a Faux Fur jacket like this is fabulous for an elegant night out… think of it paired with a Little Black Dress… perfect, right?

4. Puffer with Faux Fur Hood… I love the added touch of Faux Fur this season, and I’m also loving all the options of Faux Fur trims on jackets. If you’re not into the whole covered look, you can easily work this trend in by buying items that have trimming. I think this is the perfect happy medium.

The best part about these jackets… you can find them almost everywhere right now!

Happy Fall shopping! :)

Fashion Accessory Every Mom Needs: Priceless Necklace

I’ll never forget graduating from college and moving to NYC with my boyfriend (now my husband). I was in love, love, love with him. I knew this was the man I wanted to marry, not even a question. I actually knew this on our first date, but I didn’t tell him until a lot later. :) But as our relationship got more and more serious, and we both began to realize that we wanted to get married, the question of engagement rings came up.

The trend at that time (back in 2000) was platinum and princess cut. Everyone had “that” ring. And to be honest, as a fashionista… I’ll admit it, I wanted it too. The only problem, we had a very small budget after college and working/living in NYC. Knowing our budget, I told my “fiance,” that I didn’t even need one! I was fine without one, I just wanted to be with him. And so, we continued on planning our wedding. Matthew did surprise me with an engagement ring (a beautiful one!)… and I cherish it. I know he worked very hard to save up for one. It’s priceless to me.

Fast forward to the present and I just received yet another piece of sentimental jewelry… a priceless necklace.

My youngest son Henry is my baby. Even at the age of 3 years old, he’s my baby. As every mother can attest, her baby… well, is her BABY. Henry knows this (which can be deadly!). He started school this year, and it was very difficult for me. My baby is in school. It’s crazy to me. ON the 3rd day of school, Henry came home with a very, very special necklace. It’s priceless.

This is why every mom needs one… it goes with everything, it’s always “in trend,” and it will never, ever go out of style.

Why?

Because it’s priceless.

Menswear for Women: 3 Things to “Borrow” from your Husband

In honor of Father’s Day coming up (note June 19th!)… I thought I’d do a fun post on menswear that us ladies can get a little use out of! (Now – considering the man in my life is 6’2″ and I’m 5′ – I have to be a little creative when dispensing this kind of fashion advice.)

Sometimes the easiest thing to do is raid your man’s closet…

So what are some things to “borrow?”

Here are my top 3 recommendations:

1. T-shirts. Talk about the perfect sleepwear. You have built in nightgowns/sleep-shirts without having to go out and buy any. I was shopping last week, and there were sleep-shirts on sale for $9, honestly… it was like wearing one of my husband’s tees. It was just as long. It was just as big and comfy. And it was just as soft. My husband has an affinity for white tees… his tees (sorry, sweetie!) are now moonlighting as my tees to sleep in.

2. Button-downs… there are 2 things you can use his button-downs – beach cover-ups and maternity wear. Last summer I did this and it was perfect, I grabbed some of Matt’s light blue button-downs, not his super dressy ones… but a couple that he had in there for more causal occasions, and used them as beach cover-ups on the beach. They were awesome! Not to mention… they can save you some money. Maternity wise, borrowing your man’s shirt is a great option. Even though it won’t fit to your exact form, it’s still comfy to toss on, un-buttoned and wear out and about. Hey… it’s in the closet, so why not use it – right?

3. Undies… I’m sure you’re thinking – WHAT!? But wait, think Carrie Bradshaw. She did something in one episode that was classic. She wore men’s briefs to bed. It was absolutely Sex and the City fashion-fabulousness… but I thought it was very clever of Patricia Field to do that. This one may be a little more a stab in the dark, but you it’s a fun one!

Little White Dress

There’s one thing in the fashion department that screams summer — dressing in summer whites!

I remember when I worked for Donna Karan, she’d shift to summer whites as soon as the summer heat began to sizzle. Her clothing was a combination of being lightweight, almost gauze-like and fabulously free-flowing. It was fashionably-inspirational.

Everyone talks about the LBD (Little Black Dress) being the essential piece every woman needs in her closet. I absolutely agree with this advice. Every woman should have a LBD that fits them beautifully and that can be worn for a variety of different events and occasions. It’s one of those “smart” pieces to own. I just think there’s a time and a place for the LBD.

When it’s the summer – go for something a little different. When the sun is shining bright and the temps are in the 80s… ditch the LBD and bring on the LWD (Little White Dress). Usually I try and stay away from wearing whites because of the stain factor. With 4 sons, it’s not so easy staying (and being) stain free. I had maple frosting all over me yesterday thanks to a Dunkin Donuts maple-frosted donut! But when summer fashion calls, sometimes you just need to fashion-sacrifice. Bring. It. On.

There are 3 things I genuinely love about LWD:

1. They’re very crisp looking. You can get any style LWD and still look clean and crisp. It definitely exudes summer fun.
2. You can find LWDs with some gorgeous added-detail to give it that extra something-something factor.
3. There’s no need to worry about the latest trends and styles with a LWD, it’s ALWAYS in-style and in-trend. These are the exact kind of pieces us moms want in our closest, there’s no thought process with it – it’s easy and it’s fashionable (a great combination).

How to Wear a Summer Scarf

Let a summer scarf be your accessory of choice this season!

I know it may sound silly for me to recommend bringing a scarf into your wardrobe in the summer, but believe me… it’s a fabulous and chic accessory to wear. Just make sure you’re finding some scarves that are very lightweight… you don’t want anything too heavy and/or too bulky on you because you will absolutely be too hot!

I opt for 2 different kinds of scarves:
1) Lightweight cotton
2) Linen
(ps – you can’t go wrong with these fabrics)

Usually when I recommend wearing a scarf to my friends and readers, the next questions is… “How should I be wearing my scarf?” Truthfully, there are dozens of ways to tie and wear your scarf, but I did want to share 5 easy ways to wear a scarf. I promise anyone can do these styles, and the more you get comfortable rocking a scarf, the more you’ll be wanting to wear them!

Real Mom Celebrity Fashion

As a mom to 4 little boys, my day-to-day attire is usually pretty casual.  If we’re on the playground, I’m in sweats.  If we’re heading out to dinner, I’m in jeans.  If we’re on a walk, I’m in sneakers and shorts.  If we’re at the beach, I’m in a one-piece and sundress chasing them around.  I’m in – what I like to call – real mom attire.

There’s nothing more refreshing to me than seeing some of my fave mom celebrities out and about with their kids in real mom attire.  It always seems so “Hollywood” to me when I see some mom celebs out with their kids in their brand new Gucci or Pucci!  You can’t get down and dirty on the playground on in the sandbox with a pair of high heels on!

When it comes to mom celebs… here are a few of my favorite.  These ladies exemplify mom fashion beautifully.  We have seem them look gorgeous on red carpets.  We have seen them transform into characters on TV and in the movies.  And we see them in “real life” through photos with their kids.  I love the realness.  I love the comfort. I love the true mom fashion that they exhibit (because as we all know, this is the real deal – not the red carpets!)

Jennifer Garner – She always, always, always keeps it real and I love that about her! Whether she’s at the park, at the grocery store, at a restaurant – I love seeing her in “real life mode.” She’s exactly like the rest of us!

Brooke Burke – She’s one of the most beautiful moms out there! Without an inch of makeup on, she’s still gorgeous. But this is what I just LOVE about Brooke Burke – she’s always with her kids/family. It’s wonderful to see. And when she’s with them, she’s not dolled up! She’s not afraid to get out there and be “mom” to the world.

Denise Richards -The one thing I love about Denise Richards is that she puts her daughters first… in front of everything. She’s just one of those moms who understands that family is the most important thing at the end of the day. When I see her in photos out with her kids, she’s in such basic “California” attire. She’s in yoga clothes, sweats, jeans, capris… casual and relaxed clothing. It makes her so relatable.

Kelly Ripa – She’s my guru! LOL… I love her to pieces!  She could wear a paper bag and still look chic and fashionable! This is what I love about Kelly, living in NYC, you always have to be on-the-go and (most of the time) on your feet, she keeps it SO REAL. She always looks beautiful and happy and in casually chic clothing. She’s so NYC!

Heidi Klum – I love that she’s a super-duper model and hangs out with her kids on the playground in flips and jeans. I bow down! Heidi is so hands-on with her kids when you see her in photos, and I love that her fashion follows that. She’s always in the perfect mom fashion attire!

Kate Hudson – She’s the most fabulous dresser! Kate is the definition of boho, and I love that she translates that look into her everyday attire with her son. She could be walking the streets of NYC and still look relaxed, comfortable and fabulous. I love that about her and why I absolutely have her on this list!
