Fun iPhone Apps for Kids

SUBTITLE-2

Looking for some fun apps to add to your iPhone or iPad?

For your younger kids, try Alien Assignment (free). It is a fun scavenger hunt app that uses your device’s camera. When the alien needs something, your child must find a household item that fits the description and take a picture of it. Fun and learning at the same time.

It’s never to early to learn about healthy eating. Go Nini  (free) is a helpful app that makes a game of making good food choices. Foods that are “Go”, “Slow” and “Whoa” help teach children about the types of food they should eat anytime, sometimes, and rarely.

For ages 8 and up, try StoryLines (free). Think of it as a digital version of the “telephone” game. The first person chooses a common phrase and passes the device to the next person, who draws a picture of that phrase and passes the the device to the next person, who must write a caption for that picture. And so on up to 9 players. When the last person is done, you review the storyline to see how different the last caption is from the first phrase. It’s both fun and educational.

9-11. Weird but True (free with 0.99 add-ons for additional fact packs) is a National Geographic app that provides lots of little known and downright strange factoids about any number of topics like lobsters and astronauts.

And of course for the little ones just starting out with basic learning, the Garanimals Learn, Play, Share app (free) teaches letters, numbers and shapes by association.

Add a little fun and learning to your summer.

Guilty Pleasures

Recently, I watched the Glee episode on the musical Guilty Pleasures. I started thinking about my personal guilty pleasures. I regularly talk about taking time for yourself on my posts, and your guilty pleasures are a great way to think about yourself. Treating yourself with these things can lift your mood and release your stress.

I’m sharing some of my guilty pleasures so you can start thinking about the possibilities!

Flowers – I love flowers. I the spring you will find me wandering around the Garden Center just looking at all the possibilities!

Reality Television – I am definitely a reality junkie! Whether it be the Real Housewives series, a cooking competition show, or pretty much any reality show, it’s on my DVR list. These definitely make my husband roll his eyes.

Hot Fudge Sundae – Just writing about this has me drooling. Some vanilla custard covered with Hot Fudge trailing down, YUMMO!

Sleeping in – I used to love mornings! As my kids get older I covet these. On the weekends when they are quietly playing downstairs, you’ll find me laying in bed trying to fall back asleep or laying in bed playing on my iPhone.

Office Supplies – I truly think I have an office supply obsession.  There is nothing better than a new notebook and a nice pen or a freshly sharpened pencil.

80′s Movies – Wasting time watching pretty much anything with Molly Ringwald or Meg Ryan in it just makes me happy!

Yoga Pants  You’ll find me in my yoga pants anytime I am at home and even sometimes while I am in the drive thru at school picking up my son. They are so soft and heavenly!

Playlist –  This is littered with Madonna, ABBA, the Wicked Soundtrack and old school rap music. Thrown in there is my favorite classical composer Vivaldi. Weird… I know!

Tote Bags –  Another small obsession… you can never have enough!

iPhone/ipad – I can never get enough time with these…

So, here are some of my indulgences. What are your’s?

5 Terrific Android Smartphone Apps

I use my phone for so many things and I love that it’s so powerful and versatile. I always feel like I’ve got a lifeline to information and I can tackle anything when I’ve got my fully charged Android with me.  Here are five apps that I use regularly that take my phone to the next level of power and convenience.

CardStar – consolidate all of your shopping reward card information into this handy free app. With it, I never have to fumble around for the actual card or miss out on rewards opportunities because I’ve given the card to my husband or child to use. Just bring up the bar code when you’re at the checkout and let the cashier scan it. Also available for iphone and Blackberry.

CamScanner - with this app, I can take a photo of a document and have CamScanner turn it into a pdf that can be uploaded to the cloud or emailed as an attachment. This is a great way to digitize business receipts and save them as files for reconciling expense reports. There’s a free version as well as a licensed versions for $4.99.  Also available for iphone.

Swype – I am terrible at touch typing on my phone. I watch others and it looks so easy, but I just never got the hang of it. My solution is the free Swype app which allows me to just move my finger over the keys I want, hesitating every so slightly on each and Swype puts the words together for me. It takes a little getting used to, but once you do, it’s fast and really convenient to enter text.  For Android and Nokia devices only.

Google Docs – I just love that I an access any of my cloud documents on my phone. This app allows me to quickly view docs that I own or that have been shared with me wherever I am. Yes it’s a little bit harder to create or work on docs on your phone, but for viewing purposes, this is a real convenience. There’s no native iphone or Blackberry app, but you can access Google Docs at docs.google.com from any phone browser.

250+ Solitaires – I’m not ALL business. I do like to play solitaire. Forty Thieves to be specific. I can get lost for hours playing this game and I just love having it at hand anytime I have time to spare. My husband will attest to this as any car trip is a great opportunity for me to get lost in my games. Beats staring out the window.  It’s free and also available for iphone.

There are so many apps available and there are many other good ones.  Evernote is way at the top of the list, but since I already wrote about that app, I thought I’d share these.
