Halloween surely tests the limits of the monthly budget. We have been wracking our brains trying to think of ways to save money and still have a great halloween costume. Kim wrote about how her mom used to make her costumes, and that is one way. But sometimes the cost of crafting supplies is more than the cost of a store bought costume.
Last week we wrote about girl’s costumes you can make from Garanimals outfits and then wear all season. This week we are featuring an option for your little guys.
The football player is a classic costume. How many little quarterbacks do you see wandering around on the Halloween? It is an easy costume for moms and the boys love it. There is something about a little guy putting on a helmet that makes him so happy. Garanimals shirts can be paired with any of the athletic pants to make a multitude of sports uniforms. Add in a little face paint and a helmet that you have from a sibling or you can pick one up that you can reuse when your son is ready to play.
Any other outfits that you can see as costumes?

Holidays can be so expensive!
How about this idea: make a halloween costume out of something that your little girl can wear straight through the season!
Luckily animal prints are hot this season. Garanimals has embraced this trend in a big way. Pair this outfit with an inexpensive leopard ear headband, or better yet, one of those adorable hats with ears that are everywhere this year. Throw a little face paint on and you have a great costume on the 31st as well as a new outfit to wear the rest of the season.
Stay tuned for the boys version next week.

I recently read a survey that said 82% of moms make their children’s Halloween costume. So, lets add that to the mom guilt list. Why? Maybe because my mom made elaborate costumes for me each and every Halloween. Check out the picture of myself and my sister when we were younger. Yes, that is me wearing Halloween FANGO, a new take on BINGO, while my sister was the Queen of Hearts.
Here is my confession…..I haven’t made a Halloween costume for my kids yet.
Every year the process of picking a costume starts in September. It goes a little like this…..
Me: What would you boys want to be for Halloween?
Boys: Something with guns, swords, blood, masks…..
Me: All of those things are not allowed at your school, so we have to find something without those things.
Boys: I don’t know what I want to be. You decide.
Then the costume ideas fall on me. I feel like every idea is met with a no, until I reach that perfect one. This year my oldest is going to be an Army Man (without weapons). We are still working on an idea for the youngest.
It may be a homemade year for him, although I may need to enlist my mom’s help as she is much better at costume ideas than myself. I will definitely need to peruse my Halloween Pinterest board where there are lots of cute ideas – Spaghetti and Meatballs, a Lego piece, a washing machine, and more. Plus, while you are on Pinterest, make sure to check out Garanimals Halloween board for some other really cute ideas or visit my Halloween Party ideas from last year.
What are your children being for Halloween? Maybe you can give me a good idea!

Halloween is right around the corner! My sons cannot wait. We have gone back and forth as to what they actually want to be for Halloween, but I think we’ve finally confirmed on costumes — William will be a Storm Trooper, Alexander will be Jack Sparrow, Benjamin will be Luigi and Henry will be Mario. Ahh… I can take a deep breath, we’re set!
Shopping for Halloween costumes for kids can be a little overwhelming. It’s difficult for a child to decide (definitively) what they want to be for Halloween, especially when there’s so many incredible costumes to choose from. I mean, really… walk into any costume shop right now and you’ll be overwhelmed too on the options! It’s sometimes Halloween-insanity!
I’ve been asked recently by many mothers to identify some of the “trendiest” Halloween Costumes for Kids this year. What’s hot? What’s trending? What’s worth spending money on?
There are some fabulous costumes choices right now for kids, so I’m excited to share some of my favorite and trendiest picks!
1. The Smurf’s!
With the movie so hot, hot, hot… it only makes sense that the costume would be “hot,” too! My nephew wants to be a Smurf for Halloween and every time my sister-in-law heads to the costume shop, they’re sold out! She finally ordered one online. It doesn’t matter if you’re going to be a Smurf, Papa Smurf or Smurfette — all are trending and fabulous!
2. Jack Sparrow!
With Pirates of the Caribbean being such a huge hit right now, too… your child can’t go wrong going out as Jack Sparrow! There’s something about being a pirate that’s mysterious and fun and exciting for a child. Add some “arghs!” to your Halloween night and you’ll be the perfect pirate of all!
3. Wonder Woman!
I love seeing this costume be such a BIG hit this Halloween! Wonder Woman is trendy like crazy right now. I actually know 4 little girls who are going as Wonder Woman this year. I love the positivity for a girl that this costume brings — it shows power and strength and energy! It’s GIRL POWER! I love it, cape and all! Why should boys get all the superhero fun?
4. Angry Birds
Ahh… don’t even get me started on this one! It’s all my sons play on my iPad. This Angry Bird craze kind of came out of nowhere, and I’ll tell you what — they’re infiltrating Halloween, too! Costumes are flying off the shelves! If you’re child is an Angry Bird lover, they will love to dress up as one for Halloween this year!
5. Captain America
Well… I’m shocked none of my sons wanted to be Captain America for Halloween this year. It literally shocks me. The movie made Captain American a huge hit this Halloween, creating costumes with shields and masks and lots of “abs!” The costumes are ADORABLE and I can only imagine how many superheroes will be walking around my neighborhood this Halloween!
