Popular Spanish Baby Names

The Social Security Administration released its 2011 list of most popular baby names this week and I was surprised to see that so many of the names are also popular in Spanish, starting with the number one name for girls: Sophia. Although not spelled like that in Spanish, it’s still close enough. The rest of the list includes a few other names that are also popular in Spanish such as Isabella, Olivia and Mia. In terms of most popular baby names for boys, here are some from the top 10 list: Michael, William, Daniel and Alexander all of which have a Spanish version and are popular too.

Most Latino parents have a hard time choosing a name for their baby because while we want to keep our culture alive, we also want to make sure the name can be pronounced easily in both English and Spanish. So what are some popular Latino names? For girls, many of them are the same as they are for the general population: Sofía and Isabella, which are the names of two of my nieces. But then there’s also Camila, Valentina, Valeria, Gabriela, Daniela and Victoria, to name a few.

For boys, Santiago, Sebastián, Matías, Mateo, Nicolás, Alejandro and Diego are just some of the examples of most popular Latino names. I know at least one of each, starting with Santiago, the name of my 2-year-old son.

If you’re looking for more ideas for names in Spanish, I suggest you check BabyCenter en Español’s list of the 100 most popular Hispanic names. I’m pretty sure you’ll be able to find something you will like.

What are your favorite Spanish baby names?
