Trends for Girls Summer Dresses

Summer is in FULL SWING!

If you’re anything like me right now, you have events and special occasions every single weekend throughout the rest of the summer. We have 3 weddings, a family reunion and a swimming banquet over the last 7 weeks! It’s CRAZY! I have to make sure my sons are dresses “perfectly” for each event, you know… polo tee and dressy shorts. Boys are pretty easy and pretty basic when it comes to clothing and summer trends.

But what about the girls?

I know I don’t have a daughter, but I am a a fashionista with nieces, and I make it my business to know what’s trending. I am personally in love with all the trends right now for little girls. They’re cute. They’re adorable. They’re feminine. They’re sweet. They’re perfection. They’re exactly the kinds of trends you want your little ones in! And I mean this in the best sense possible because everything is beautifully appropriate!

So as we’re still dressing for summer, here are 5 trends for girls summer dresses that are trending fabulously!

Have some fun dressing your sweet little ladies this summer!

1. Bold Prints – Bold colors are beautiful colors. I love a bold dress right now because it’s an eye-catcher! This trend is wonderful because any little girl can pull off this trend. Think bold pinks and tangerines and yellows! Have some fun finding bold prints!

2. Color Blocking – This is directly from the “big girls!” Color blocking is a HUGE trend. Color blocking is everywhere – shoes, tops, handbags, etc. I love color blocking on a dress for a little girl. Essentially it’s just the combination of colors. That’s it!

3. Flower Power – Oh, yes! Floral prints are a huge trend right now. I love a dress with a floral print because it’s so delicate and oh-so-summer-perfect! I think it just screams little lady and is just the most fabulous choice for little girls. I am a HUGE fan of this trend right now for girls!

4. Ruffles – Sweet and adorable! I feel like there’s really not another way to describe ruffles on a little lady’s dress. I am just over the moon for ruffles. I love this trend because there really is so much you can do with a ruffle. They’re just exquisite!

5. Embellishments – You need a little bling bling! :) I love this trend because it’s different and creative and fashionable. My nieces love to find dresses with added embellishments. It’s VERY girlie and it’s VERY fashion-forward. I’m all for it! Now only if I can find some of these dresses in big girl sizes… :)

What to wear to a summer wedding

My sister is getting married on July 14th.

She cannot wait. Her groom cannot wait. And I cannot wait.

She has honored me and asked me to be her matron of honor, and I accepted in a second.

We’ve been doing lots and lots of last-minute wedding details, but there’s one thing that I seem to be getting from everyone over and over and over again.

“Audrey? What should I wear to Jane’s wedding?”

Oh, yes. I’m the go-to what-should-I-wear girl. Truthfully, I love it!

Summer weddings are hot and furious right now – literally and figuratively. There’s a wedding almost every weekend and it’s also REAL hot this time of year! You need to make sure you’re wearing something comfortable and that will keep you in the “cool” side if it’s a hot, hot day. I always think back to my wedding in 2000… it was 104 degrees that day!

I have 5 suggestions when it comes to finding what to wear to a summer wedding:

1. COLOR!

I love a beautiful splash of color for a summer wedding! Bright and bold is perfect. I chose this tangerine because it’s so vibrant! I feel like it’s just a happy dress, you know? What better dress for a wedding!

2. Florals

Ahhh… a floral dress for a summer wedding is so elegant. I love that a floral dress exudes the summer. It’s just breath-taking and so adorable! I can see this at an outdoor wedding perfectly!

3. Maxi Dress

What I love about a maxi during the summer is that anyone can look beautiful in one. It doesn’t matter your size or your shape, it’s just a stunning dress for any body type. I love a dress that can work magic like that! I love that you can get one in halter, spaghetti and strapless! Just gorgeous!

4. Sheath

I love a classic Sheath for a summer wedding. It’s sophisticated. It’s beautiful. It’s gorgeous. I think this is such a safe bet for anyone not sure as to what to wear to a summer wedding!!

5. Color Blocking Dress

I love a good color blocking dress, especially for this time of year. It’s SO trendy and so chic for a summer wedding. This is the type of dress where you will standout and look fabulous among the crowd. A total, total eye-catcher!

5 Ways to wear denim shorts

Oh, yes. Denim shorts.

Is it a summer yes or a summer no?

I’m all about wearing them IF (and ONLY IF) you know HOW to wear them. You don’t want to look foolish in them, you want to rock them and look stylish and fashionable. It’s that summer item that can literally make or break an outfit.

So what’s a mom to do?

I’ve pulled together 5 different looks as to how to wear denim shorts this summer. I have a different style and feel for each pair and I’m excited to show the looks. Remember, you want to have fun with summer fashion, but you also really want to make sure you look comfortable in what you have on.

1) Casually Cool

Grab your favorite button down and wear it with your denim shorts. Pair it with a pair of comfy sandals and you’re good to go. You’re casual, but you’re cool. I love a button down with denim, it’s so perfect.

2) Funky Cool

A pair of denim shorts with a tank is a basic outfit, but add a scarf and it’s fabulous! Find a print or a fabric or a color you love and ROCK it. I love the look of a scarf with tank, it’s stylish and oh-so-funky. I love this look. You could wear this out to dinner or to a playdate!

3) Classic and Preppy

A polo, cable knit cotton sweater and boat shoes can go a LONG way. It’s a very nautical and classic look to play with during the summer. I love the preppy feel to it!

4) SEXY

Yes, it’s OK to have some sexy fun with an outfit! I found an oversized tank and paired it with high espadrilles and fabulous jewelry. I love the boho feel to this look, but also the sexiness to it.

5) Sporty

I love this look because it’s probably the most appropriate for most moms! LOL… sporty. Grab a pair of sneakers, hat and tee and sport your look. I love the ability to chase my sons in comfy shoes and clothes and this is what the sporty look gives you.

Summer Beauty: Makeup with SPF

I still wear makeup in the summer, even on the hottest of days. I’m not “painted” from top to bottom, but I still do take the time to put on some makeup when I’m heading out or going somewhere with the boys. Makeup makes me feel beautiful. Makeup makes me feel good about myself. And makeup… well, it just is a woman’s best friend. :)

In the summer, makeup can get tricky. I’m always worried about it (literally) sweating off my face and I always am worried about my makeup not being protected by the sun. And when I say protected, I mean… makeup with SPF.

Believe it or not, it’s the most common question I get from my readers in the summer. Everyone wants me to recommend some amazing makeup with SPF in it. It’s one of those things that as we all get older, we become more and more aware of being better to our skin and taking the measures to do so. Finding makeup with SPF in it is a way to start!

So is there such a thing? Makeup with SPF?

You BETCHA!

I’m going to go from face to eyes to cheeks to lips with makeup that will leave you looking beautiful, but also leave you covered and protected.

Foundation: I recommend Neutrogena Healthy Skin Compact Makeup. It’s light. It gives amazing coverage. It gives you a very natural look. It’s flawless and it’s SPF 55! You can feel comfortable and know that what you’re putting on is absolutely working!

Eyes: I recommend Illuminaré’s eye colors. They are gentle, cream eye colors that will not crease, smudge or sweat off. They are safe for contact lens wearers, or people with very sensitive eyes. This is the kind of eye coverage you want as you’re out and about on a hot, sunny day. Love the SPF protection!

Cheeks: I recommend CoverGirl & Play Simply Ageless Sculpting Blush with SPF 22. If you want something that’s going to stay on and leave a gorgeous color, this is it! I am in love with my Simply Ageless, not to mention… so is my mother. I love that there’s SPF built right in. It really is a perfect go-to makeup item and leaves you feeling gorgeous!

Lips: Oh, yes! The lips! I recommend Tarte’s Natural Lip Sheers with SPF 15. I don’t ever go crazy in the summer with lip colors. Actually this is the first time ever in my life that I’ve stepped out of the box and gone a little bit more on the fabulous side with some gorgeous new colors. In my “daily” life I’m pretty routine and regular. I don’t need to go overboard, but I also love to have something on. There’s SPF 15 built right into this sheer!

5 Ways to wear white shoes (because it’s time!)

It’s time to get those summer whites out of your closet ladies!

Even the shoes!

I remember as a child my Nana buying me a brand new pair of white shoes every single summer. Memorial Day weekend was our reminder that we needed to head to “Jamiel’s Shoe World” in Warren, RI and buy me a new pair. My Nana never had a daughter, so she LIVED for shopping with her granddaughters. What a happy time for me to remember. I loved when we did special things like that.

Well… I may be 34 years old, but I still get excited and ready to take out my summer shoes with the beginning of every Memorial Day weekend!

The one question I always get from moms when it comes to wearing white shoes is… “Audrey – what do I wear them with?” It seems to be that head-scratching fashion question.

I want to show 5 different ways to pull in white shoes. Have some fun. Use your style for inspiration. Don’t go too crazy. Stay in your comfort zone and really allow yourself to wear white, and wear it proud!

5 Ways:

1. If you’re going to go for a white wedge, pair with it white jeans and a top with a color punch! It’s a gorgeous way to bring in some color, but the best will be that the pants and the shoes blend. It’s summer crisp!

2. Casual as can be is a pair of fabulous white thongs. I’m addicted to thongs in the summer (and I’m 5 feet tall!). I love pairing them with shorts and casual tanks. I always make sure there’s a flair of white in my outfits when I’m wearing my white thongs. It just works well.

3. Looking for a work outfit? Look no further. Always opt for a trouser pant and wear dressy white flats. I found these with a little dazzle on them, but you can find plain ones. I tossed it with a dressy sweater and a scarf. It’s a simple and classic way to wear white flats to work.

4. Simple and classic and elegant. I love a summer dress for a summer occasion or event. Pair it with a gorgeous pair of clean white heels and you’ll look GORGEOUS! This is such a go-to outfit for the summer! I LOVE IT!

5. Trendy and chic. This is MY kind of outfit. Denim capris with a pretty casual top, paired with a flat pair of espadrilles. I am loving this outfit right now. It’s super cute and can be worn just about anywhere in the summer – pool, lunch, grocery store, playdate, girls night out or date night!

Perfect and easy hair for the summer

Hair for the summer is not always easy to perfect. With the humidity, sometimes your hair just has a complete thought/brain/heart of its own. It can actually be VERY difficult to tame.

Ever since I was a little girl, my summer hair has been wild and free. I have very thick hair, so it becomes a lion’s mane in the summer (no joke). I literally need to wear it up every single day because it will just look ridiculous if I don’t! I’m always envious of women who have very short, cropped hair in the summer because their “do” is so easy to do!

But… with all this being said, there are some very easy ways to achieve perfect hair in the summer. I’ve sort of become an obsessed-queen at finding the ways to make this happen. This week I wanted to share with you 5 different ways to create perfect do’s for the summer months ahead. These styles are trending, but they’re also very easy to create (all on your own!).

(And if you really want to have some hair fun, check out Pinterest every once in awhile for some great ideas!)

Have some HAIR fun this summer… !

1) Low Messy Bun –

This one should be easy for any mom to create! I love that messy is in because usually my buns are messy, so the only difference is now they’re IN! I love it! I’m a HUGE lover of a bun, and this summer… the lower, the better. By the pool, at the beach, where ever!

2) Slicked Back Hair –

OK, let me just tell you how excited I am about this style, too! With the summer months and by the pool and at the beach, my hair will now officially be “trendy” if it’s wet and slicked back. And to be honest, the wetter it looks, the better!
*Photo from RealBeauty.com

3) Hair Bands –

I love that hair bands are in because this is such an EASY hair fix for any woman. There are mornings I wake up and my layers in front are sticking up all over the place, and it’s just not that flattering! I love that with a hair band, I can easily wrap and go. Not to mention, they come in so many beautiful prints and colors!

4) Braids –

Braids aren’t just for little girls, they’re also for the big ones, too! A loose braid down the back is perfect and looks so delicate, yet it’s so much fun! I love to be able to just toss a braid in my front layers or just the longer pieces in the back. Either way, a braid is very trendy right now (and also easy to do!).

5) Center Parts –

OK, so this goes for anything. If you’re wearing your hair down in the summer and don’t know how to style it, just part it right down the middle. If you’re wearing it back, part it smack down the middle, too! Easy does it, right? (*And slick it back!)

5 Ways to Wear White Jeans

It’s that time of year… are you ready!?

The white jeans need to be out mamas! It doesn’t matter that it’s not exactly Memorial Day yet, it’s just time to grab them and toss them on! Personally, I couldn’t be more excited. I love, love, love white jeans in the spring and summer. Every season I splurge and buy myself a brand new pair of white jeans.

I love when they’re completely new and crisp and classic and ready to be worn!

The beauty of white jeans is that they’re “so” summer, and can be worn in many different ways and styles. They’re the perfect go-to item for the summer when you’re ready to head out.

I want to show you 5 different ways to wear white jeans (all different styles!):

1) Monochromatic… Summer Whites

There’s nothing as easy and as stylish as wearing summer whites from head to toe. I love wearing basic white pieces and adding pops of color through accessories. The addition of gold jewelry is gorgeous!

2) Red, White and Blue…

July 4th is one of the most festive and fun holidays for families! I wanted to show how you can take your finest white jeans and dress them up with some gorgeous red, whites and blues! Have some fun and go overboard with the festiveness!

3) Casually Chic…

I love being able to relax and kick back with my white jeans. Baseball hat, shoes and a relaxed tee – perfect outfit to watch a Little League game or soccer game. Even a beautiful bike ride through the park. Such a nice way to dress white jeans down.

4) Trendy-as-can-be!…

Come on… you can’t get any cooler than wearing a tank with boots in the summer! LOL… I love doing this when the weather is in the 70′s. Toss on a Fedora with it and KABOOM – you’ve got a stylin’ outfit! I have to say, my sons always say when I wear this, “Mom – aren’t you hot?” But it’s worth the sweat for fashion! ;)

5) Tangerine…

You know I needed to get some Tangerine in, right? I love wearing tunics with white jeans. I suggest grabbing some skinny jeans or at least jeans that are tapered at the bottom. I love the look of a tunic with thongs, it’s such a elegant and sophisticated outfit to pull together.

Top Trendy Hairstyles for Girls and Boys

When it comes to hair for my boys, I’m a style-fanatic. The tough part for me is that they actually have an opinion now! LOL… I’m 1/2 kidding, but in all seriousness, my boys like to tell me how they WANT to do their hair now. Gone are the days of me cutting and styling without them caring. Oh, no… that’s been replaced with comments like, “Mom… don’t do that!” I never thought I’d see the day!

So… I’ve made it my mission (as a mom and kid style expert) to be on top of the hair trends for boys and girls right now. What’s hot and what’s not!? These are the questions I’m asked by moms all the time, and hair… well, it’s been coming up (no pun intended!).

I wanted to share with you what hairstyles are trending right now for the little ladies and the little guys… enjoy and get your kids ready for the summer, hair and all!

Little ladies first:

1) Inverted Bob…

Victoria Beckham has made this style chic, chic and chic! I recently was told by a hairstylist in NYC that this is one of the most requested styles from moms for their girls right now. I love the short length to it for the summer. If you’re going to short, this is a cute style to go with.

2) Bangs…

Bangs are back. If you’re looking for a little different twist to your daughter’s hair, bangs are a wonderful way to change things up. My mother used to do bangs for me and my sister when we were kids! I absolutely love them.

3) BRAIDS, BRAIDS and more BRAIDS…

I have to get better into this trend for my OWN hair! Braids are beyond popular right now. My nieces who are both 11 years old wear braids all the time, everyone is! I think it’s such a classic way for a little girl to wear her hair. But braids have changed since I was a kid. Now there’s so many different and creative ways to do it.

Little handsome men:

1) I love to call it, the “Bieber”… or, well… the old Bieber!

I’m still seeing lots of shaggy hair on boys, and I LOVE it! My Henry’s hair is just like this. Justin Bieber made shaggy hair trendy and ultra-cool, and it’s not going anywhere!

2) Buzz cut… !

Oh, moms of boys – you know what I mean, right? There’s one hairstyle that never, ever, ever seems to go out of style. It’s timeless. It’s classic. It’s perfect for your little guys, so keep it going this summer!

3) Faux Hawk…

Oh, yes… I said it. My son Alexander could pull this style off effortlessly! I love this cut because it’s a “cool” option for the summer. It’s (dare I say it) rad and trendy, but also a great style for the summer. Lots of celebs sport this style and really make it the happening “do.”

How to transition your makeup to spring and summer

I’ve always been one to change makeup colors when the spring and summer come. In the fall and winter I’m usually all about dark colors. Charcoal on my eyes. Deep bronze on my cheeks. Darker lip colors. I guess you could say I go for warmer colors in the colder months.

When the weather starts to heat up, I’m all about lighter shades and colors that make me happy. I usually just use mascara on my eyes and drop eyeshadow. On my cheeks I use a rose. And my lips, I’m all about the sheer gloss.

Seriously, my spring and summer makeup is almost polar opposite to my fall and winter’s.

Transitioning your makeup into the spring and summer months can be very easy, and also, it’s a great way to freshen up your look! I highly recommend changing things up a bit with the new season upon us in the beauty department.

Here are 6 Tips from Transitioning your Makeup to Spring and Summer:

1. Foundation: Stay away from heavy foundation by opting for lightweight mixtures or powder foundations. With the warmer months, you don’t want your foundation to look too thick, you want to make sure you use it sparingly. I love powder because it keeps it very light and goes on super easy.

2. Eyeshadow: This fall and winter, it was all about purples and greens. This spring and summer, try some pastels or go for some light blues, golds and light browns. Don’t go too dark, really lighten it up!

3. Blush: In the fall and winter, it’s OK to do heavier on the blush because you can easily balance it out by going heavy on your eyes or lips. The spring and summer are much, much different. Opt for blushes that are in the pale pink family. You just want to dab on your cheeks, don’t go crazy. Enjoy the fact that with the warmer months, you don’t need a lot.

4. Mascara: This one is an easy one. Go with a soft brown. Stay away from the classic black. You don’t want your eyelashes clumpy and too heavy in the summer sun. And always, always go with waterproof.

5. Eyeliner: I’m a lover of eyeliner. I wear it all the time, throughout all the seasons. The one thing I do to make sure I keep it fresh still in the spring and summer is opt for a gray rather than my standard black or brown. It’s an easier and a more versatile color to wear throughout the summer because it still goes with anything, but it’s a very light color. You just want something to make your eyes pop, not go crazy.

6. Lips: Go for corals and pinks this summer. Tangerine is the hottest color of the season, and there are some gorgeous shades that bring on the orange tones. I also keep talking about how pops of color are trending. Pop colors through your lips. Bright pinks. Bold reds. Yummy oranges. This is the perfect time to have a ton of FUN!
