Knowing if Your Family is Complete

When my husband and I got married we made a pact – if we have two children of the same gender, then we will try for a third. Ten years later I am a mom of two boys in my mid-thirties. Now is the time that I need to start deciding if that girl is truly worth a try.

I truly never imagined that I wouldn’t have a daughter. I never had a brother and my close cousins were all girls. I didn’t know much about what little boys liked or did. I dreamt of days playing Barbie Dream House, dressing in pretty dresses and having tea parties.

Instead, my days are filled with Legos, wrestling and endless sports. They truly don’t care what they wear and would play video games from sun up until sun down! Don’t get me wrong, I adore my boys and all the amazing things that boys come with, but sometimes I think about the dreaminess that comes with another baby, and all the dreams that would come with a girl.

Then I think of the midnight feedings, diapers, and the stuff they need. I know if I would be blessed with another child I would adore them, but I can do without high chairs, car seats, diaper bags and rattles. I’ve reached that spot that I’ve been dreaming of also. That time when you can jump in the car and go without packing and planning. Most of the temper-tantrums have ended and the diaper changing is long gone. This is what makes me most certain that the pact we once made won’t be fulfilled, but I am okay with that!

But, how do you know if you are ready to make that decision? Think about these items.

Are you and your partner on the same page?

What are your reasons?

Do you have enough time or money or energy for another child?

Give yourself some time – things can change.

Go with your gut. Think about the idea of more kids – does it make your heart skip a beat or give you anxiety?

Children are a big commitment! I know sometimes my thoughts about having another child are more derived from thoughts of other moms, then my own. You know your family the best!
